Daytime Royalty-correction: Y&R airs 1992 repeat for July 4 (first time rebroadcasting this!) (2024)

The original Y&R episode #4896, which aired July 3, 1992...
will be broadcast on CBS on July 4, 2023.
Yes. 1992 !

https://www.soapoperanews.net/2023/06/b ... -july.html

(Presumably it will air July 3, 2023 on Global-Canada)

This has not aired in three decades!

John Abbott hosts a picnic outside by the swimming pool on the Abbott mansion grounds.
The Winters and Chancellor clans/relatives/friends attend.

I assume Y&R chose this repeat because John Abbott is the host. But there is so much more to it!

Here is a recap of the full episode as it originally aired:
(A lot if this will probably be cut for the 2023 broadcast).

Mamie is there at the Abbott home. It's the morning of July 4 in Genoa City.
John is bored and lonely and considers going into the office. He speaks with Mamie as a friend.
They decide to have an impromtu poolside/picnic/party.

John tells Mamie to take off her apron, and asks her to hire caterers. John asks Mamie to attend -- he doesn't say this in so many words but he is clearly implying that he is inviting her as as an equal guest/friend/family, and clarifying that he doesn't want her to be the maid tonight. I think later in the evening he refers to Mamie as his friend.

John and Mamie telephone friends and family and invite them to the impromtu party. They tell each person they call to feel feel to bring others with them.

The caterers show up and work the party in the kitchen and as waitstaff, all wearing pink polo shirts.

The original 1992 episode has these characters
(in addition to John and Mamie):

Drucilla and Neil Winters.
Olivia and Nathan Hastings Sr. (portrayed by Nathan Purdee).
CORRECTION - Nathan Sr. is portrayed by Randy Brooks.
Olivia is pregnant with Nate Hastings Jr.

Before the party, Drucilla is making reservations for a romantic getaway for her and Neil.

Meanwhile Neil is working at Jabot on the holiday - just trying to get caught up on mail because it's quiet. (This was before there was internet. But it's like modern times when you log into your work computer during your off-hours, just to get caught up on email, LOL)

Nathan Sr. stops by Neil's office. He and Neil discuss that Olivia's pregnancy is somewhat fragile but they don't want her to know, because she shouldn't have the stress of that worry. I guess Olivia isn't a doctor yet because she doesn't know about her own condition. (No HIPAA laws back then),.

Olivia and Dru arrive at Neil's office. Neil receives the phonecall invitation from John Abbott. They all agree to go to the Abbott party together.

Dru tells Neil she has reservations to take him on this romantic getaway, but Neil informs her that he just learned that Jabot wants Dru to make presentations for Jabot for the next few days -- on tour in other cities (Dru also works for Jabot). But he has to work at the Genoa City office of Jabot, so they cannot go away together at the moment.

Also at the party:

Ashley (portrayed by Brenda Epperson).
She is involved with or married to Victor, but he doesn't attend.
Ashley mentions Victor is recently released from the hospital and recovering.
Something is going on with Ashley, and John senses it, but she won't tell him what it is.

Traci and her husband Brad Carlton.
and their infant daughter Colleen.
(Brad in a red speedo of course).
Traci and Brad are tense with one another.
Before the party, Traci is alone with the baby, and Brad is at work on the holiday. She gets the phonecall from her dad John and accepts the invitation as Brad walks in -- he just worked a short day. He is annoyed that she accepted the invitation without asking him, and she is annoyed that he was working, but glad he is home, and she understands that he would have only gone to work on a holiday if there was a need for it. He assumes that this was a long-ago planned party that she didn't want him to know about. She explains that her dad just invited her five minutes ago, it's an impromtu party. Brad wants to go to the party anyhow, so they agree to go, and they bring baby Colleen.

Jack is not in this episode, although he was invited to the party by telephone.
John said to Ashley, I wonder if he will come? Ashley said I think not (I think they mentioned Nikki but I couldn't quite hear, so I could be mistaken). You can see that Ashley knows or guesses something going on that Ashley doesn't want to discuss, she just wants her dad John to enjoy his party.

Jill brings Blade as her date.
The character Blade Bladeson is portrayed by Michael Tylo.

Kay (Katherine) Chancellor and husband Rex Sterling.
Katherine's son Brock Reynolds arrives with Gina Roma.
(Brock usually calls his mother Katherine "duch*ess" and not mother or mom).

[For those unfamiliar with the characters, Rex was portrayed by Quinn Redeker.
Rex is the biological father of Danny Romalotti and Gina Roma.
Gina is portrayed by actress Patty Weaver. She appeared (same actress) as one of the returning characters at the Genoa City gala in March 2023.
Brock is the son of Katherine's first husband from before she married the elder Phillip Chancellor.
Brock was portrayed by Beau Kazer.

Nina Webster and her date Ryan McNeil.
Nina brings her son Chance who is around 3 or 4 years old.
(But he is called "little Phillip". He didn't start calling himself Chance until he was an adult).
This was quite a while before Ryan married Nina and became Chance's stepfather (father figure).

Earlier in the day, at the Chancellor mansion, Esther was feeling ill and went upstairs to lie down.
Katherine (called "Kay" back in those days) told Rex she wanted to see little Phillip and was sad at not having seen him for a while. She comments that he is the last surviving Chancellor. She wants Rex to invite Nina and little Phillip (Chance) to visit the Chancellor mansion. Then John phones and invites Katherine and Rex to the party. Rex goes over to Nina's home and asks her to come to the party. When Nina invites Ryan, she points out that he can do some business/corporate networking while he's at the party. Apparently he just got promoted wherever he works. (I think Ryan was working at Newman back then, but I'm not sure.)

When Nina, Chance, and Ryan arrive at the party, Chance hugs Katherine and calls her Grammy Kay or Grandmother Kay, or Grandma Kay (something like that.) Just then Jill and Blade arrive. Jill is happy to see Chance, too.
Chance looks up at Jill, and comments that both his grandmothers are there.
Chance is only 3 or 4 years old but from the expression on his face, he seems aware of the complicated dynamics between Katherine and Jill. LOL.

The loyal Jabot secretary Carol Robbins is there.

Near the end, John Abbott gives a speech quoting the first few words of the Declaration of Independence. Then Neil asks to speak.

Kristoff St. John delivers a wonderful speech as Neil. Neil is speaking from his heart about equality and fairness and how the nation is being torn apart, and how the nation has come far in 200+ years, but we have so much farther to come; and we must all work together without violence, and he believes we can.

I assume William Bell wrote this speech... but Kristoff added his own passion to the delivery.

Then everyone locks arms and sings America the Beautiful.

They said there would be fireworks at the end of the party but that isn't shown. Perhaps the party continued in the following 1992 episode, or it continued offscreen. I wonder if Jack arrived in time for the fireworks? Who knows.

source: I recently had the opportunity to watch a copy of the original.
but it was via a friend's device - they had a copy of the 1992 original eppy.
**** I don't have a copy of this!
I don't have it, can't download it, can't upload it. Sorry.

*** please don't ask me where to find episodes, because I don't know.
I was lucky enough to watch this episode, and to type a recap, but it's not on my computer or phone.

This is a very imperfect recap.

DISCLAIMER - a LOT of this will be cut due for the 2023 broadcast,
(due to more time needed for commercials nowadays than 1992).
I don't know which scenes will make the cut.
