@monaa

Let me take a moment to thank you for posting on the HP Support Forums.

I understand that you have a new HP laptop and when you press the f12 key to save an excel file, it in turns enables the airplane mode 9flying mood). Not worry, I'll do my best to help you.

I did some investigation and found that we need to disable theAction Keys Mode in the BIOS.On most HP and Compaq notebook computers, it is necessary to press and hold the function key (fn) while pressing one of the f1 through f12 keys to activate the default functions; such as, increasing or decreasing the brightness of the display, the sound volume, sleep, keyboard lock, etc. On the HP Envy notebooks and other notebooks with advanced BIOS options, the function keys can be configured so that it is not necessary to press and hold the fn key. Therefore we need to disable this.

  • Press thepowerbutton to turn on the computer.

  • Press thef10key to open the BIOS setup window.

  • Press theright-arroworleft-arrowkeys to navigate to theSystem Configurationoption.

Re: F12 button changed to airplane mode, can't turn on wifi (11)

  • Press theup-arrowordown-arrowkeys to navigate to theAction Keys Modeoption, and then press theenterkey to display the Enable / Disable menu.
  • Select the desired mode:
    • Disabled: Requires pressing and holding the function key (fn) while pressing one of the f1 through f12 keys to use the action indicated on the action key.

      For example, on some computer models, if the Action Keys Mode isDisabled, pressing thef11key will minimize and maximize a web browser if open. Alternatively, pressing and holding thefn + f11keys will mute the sound.

      The action keys may vary depending on the model of notebook.

    • Enabled: Requires pressing only one of the f1 through f12 keys to use the action as indicated on the action key.

      For example, on some computer models, if the Action Keys Mode isEnabled, pressingf11will mute the sound as indicated on the action key. Alternatively, pressing and holdingfn + f11will minimize and maximize a web browser if open.

      The action keys may vary depending on the model of notebook.

  • Press thef10key to save the selection and restart the computer.

Once you have disabled it, the net time you press F12, it should not enable the airplane mode.

I sincerely hope this fixes the issue. Please feel free to let me know the results. All the best! 🙂

Hi MKazi,

thank you for the instruction.

When I press F10 then nothing happens. Do you have any other way to get to the BIOS?

KR,

Monaa

@monaa

You're welcome Monaa. 🙂

You can try the following method if the laptop does not boot to the BIOS:

  • Power on the laptop.
  • Immediately hit the Esc key repeatedly. This will bring up the startup menu.
  • In that menu hit the F10 key and the laptop will enter the BIOS.

If the laptop is still unable to enter the BIOS then perform a power drain by following the below steps:

  • Power off the laptop.
  • Remove the battery out.
  • Disconnected AC adapter from the laptop.
  • Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
  • Reconnect the battery and plug the AC adapter.
  • Power ON the laptop.

Once again ty to enter the BIOS.

Hope this helps. Let me know. Cheers! 🙂

@Ge6

Leave the network boot option to its original status. Usually, it should be disabled.

Were you able to get to the BIOS?

Let me know. 🙂
