1983 U.S.A. Samantha Smith
1983 : Samantha Smith, an 11 year old after Earlier in the year sending a letter to Soviet President Yuri V. Andropov asking why the Soviet Union wants to conquer the world. She was invited to Russia to meet the Soviet President and set off on her visit as the youngest Ambassador in US History on a two week trip to the Soviet Union.

1985 : Boris Becker wins the men's Wimbledon championships breaking multiple records in the process.

1987 Germany Petrol Tanker Accident
1987 : A petrol tanker truck crashes into an ice cream parlor in Herborn, Germany causing a massive explosion and fire which caused the death of 50 people who were trapped in the ice cream parlor.
1998 Nigeria Riots Lagos
1998 : Riots have broken out in Lagos, Nigeria following the death of the opposition leader "Chief Moshood Abiola". The riots continued for 4 days leaving over 50 dead.
2004 U.S.A. Kenneth Lay Indicted
2004 : Former Enron chairman Kenneth Lay is indicted on 11 counts of securities fraud and related charges following the collapse of Enron.
2005 Terrorist Bombing London Underground
2005 : Terrorists bombs are detonated in three crowded London subways on London's Underground System and one bus during peak rush hour travel in a synchronized attack by suicide bombers thought to be members of al-Qaeda, killing 56 people including the bombers and injuring another 700.
2006 Nigeria Jobs Lost
2006 : Nigeria announced that 33,000 civil service workers were to be fired by the end of 2006. These mass layoffs came from the civil service reform instated a year before the elections in 2007. Most of the people who lost their jobs were unfit workers with no qualifications who had been employed during military rule in the country.
2007 Iraq Truck Bomb
2007 : The small town of Amirli in Northern Iraq is attacked with a truck bomb in a busy market. A total of 105 people are killed by the blast in Amirli, while another 51 people are killed in separate attacks in the country on this day.

2008 : On the opening day of the bull run in Pamplona Spain the six bulls and some tame steers plow into spectators leaving 13 injured including tourists who were watching the famous run.
2008 Afghanistan Suicide Bomber Attacks Indian Embassy
2008 : On this day a suicide bomber attacked the Indian embassy in Kabul, killing 41 people and injuring 141. This was the deadliest attack in Kabul since the Taliban was overthrown in 2001.

Al Sharpton, and Stevie Wonder.
2011 Dead Soldiers Phones Hacked by Newspaper
2011 : Reports surfaced that dead soldiers and their families may have had their mobile phones hacked by the News of the World after rumors and allegations of the phone hacking scandal had been surfacing throughout 2011. The revelation comes after British Prime Minister David Cameron decided to set up a public inquiry into phone hacking accusations. These accusations sparked further inquiries into phone hacking by reporters at News of the World and caused great damage to its parent company News Corp and Rupert Murdoch, forcing News of the World to shut down.
2011 Sweden First Synthetic Organ Transplant
2011 : The world's first synthetic organ transplant was successfully completed by surgeons in Sweden. The operation took place in June when surgeons transplanted a completely synthetic trachea and covered it in the patient's stem cells. The thirty-six year old patient was reportedly recovering well a month after the actual operation.
2012 Ukraine Russian Pilgrims Died in Bus Crash
2012 : Fourteen Russian pilgrims died after a bus crash in Ukraine. The bus was carrying over forty people and rolled over killing fourteen. Many others were injured in the crash.
2013 North Korea Kaesong Agreement Reached
2013 : North Korea and South Korea have agreed to reopen the Kaesong Industrial complex, a joint factory park that had been shut down in April over tensions between the two countries.

Born: July 7th, 1919, London
Died: May 20, 1996, Timber Lake, Connecticut
Known For : Jon Pertree was auditioned for the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in 1936, although he was made to leave it on refusal to play the wind. He was ashore at the time that his ship, H.M.S. Hood, was sunk by the Bismarck. After the war he worked on radio and in the theater until he was chosen for the role of the BBC's Doctor Who. He was the third man to play the Doctor, and took the part for four seasons (from 1970 to 1974). He also took part in the Worzel Song in 1980, after playing the character in 1979.
